Heya playas, while everyone is gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day to either drink, party or pretend to be Irish, I’m probably gonna find myself on the other end of the question, “What do you mean you don’t you drink?”. This is something I commonly hear and to every person that asks, I give them three reasons.
People drink for a multitude of reasons, some enjoy the taste, some like getting buzzed, some like to do it to escape their problems, either way whatever your reason is, it’s very uncommon to hear from a 20-something year old that they don’t like drinking.
People drink because it’s a social activity. Sure bars may have other thinks like skeeball, air hockey or even mechanical bulls but the main reason why everyone is there is to drink alcohol.
It’s the same reason why you wear a baseball jersey to a baseball game or you buy popcorn when you go to the movies. Our society has baked the desire to go party with the consumption of alcohol into one leaving the people that don’t drink to feel like outcasts. Drinking also provides the opportunity for people to bond socially. Chances are if you walk up to someone in a bar and you ask them what they’re drinking you’re not gonna be met with blank stares but instead a description of what’s in their cup.
Now this is part of the reason why I don’t drink, the novelty of being included in things gives people the sensation of belonging, one that I feel like I get when I’m just around people that I care about. I feel like if I were put into a room with friends and only given the opportunity to talk to them, I feel like that’s all the social stimulation that I need. For me I just enjoy being around people that I care about.
I can enjoy the baseball game without wearing a baseball jersey and I can watch the movie without eating the popcorn because the popcorn tends to get stuck in your back tooth and you sit there trying to pick it out and it’s just, it’s just annoying!
The second reason people often drink is because it helps loosen then up and control their feelings of insecurity and self doubt they may have in a new place. Some call it liquid courage because it helps you go talk to the cute girl, tell all your friends that you love them and drunk dial your ex to tell them off once again. And in that state, most people seem to think it’s their way of releasing how they really feel but I think it’s actually them becoming less of themselves.
I mean if you find a drunk girl and make out with her, isn’t that kind of the same thing as an athlete winning the sport but also taking steroids? I spend a lot of time trying to keep myself grounded and present mined so that I’m aware of the world around me. And it’s in doing so that I feel like my senses become heightened and that I’m truly in the drivers seat in case I choose to do something confident. And it’s in challenging my fears that I know that I can grow above them. There’s no fear of standing at the bar awkwardly alone or being concerned because I don’t have a drink in my hand at the moment. I’m in control and I don’t want anything to stop me from doing that.
What do you guys think though, why or why don’t you drink alcohol? Is it because you’re too young, you’ve have a bad experience with it or you’re just the kind of person that likes to party and drink it up? Leave your comments below and we’ll talk about it.
As always guys, love and… wait a second, I said three reasons right?
Well, the third reason is because my parents always told me not to. They always told me to be an individual and to think for myself, to never succumb to peer pressure and to always rise above. And having the ability to say no to drinking simply because I don’t want to even though hundreds and hundreds of people have asked me to do it, I think makes me a pretty strong individual.
I know that a lot of you guys want to ask me questions but you’d rather do it anonymously. Well, I’ve got you covered. In the description I’m going to put the link to my ask.fm profile where you can submit anonymous questions and I’ll answer them for you. Click the link, it’s also down there too.
